What is UKCIS?

The UK Council for Internet Safety (UKCIS) is a collaborative forum through which the government, the tech community and the third sector work together to ensure the UK is the safest place in the world to be online.

UKCIS is a voluntary, non-statutory body, supported by a small secretariat team in the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

What is the Digital Resilience Working Group?

The Digital Resilience Working Group (DRWG) is one of six working groups within UKCIS.

The aim of the group is to develop and co-ordinate activity on a digital resilience strategy which enables individuals to have the digital skills and emotional understanding to feel empowered to take action when they encounter problems online.

Under the UKCIS mandate, the Digital Resilience Working Group works with the Home Office, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, the Department for Education and the Department of Health in these designated areas of focus, to ensure it delivers on its aims and objectives. The group also shares and promotes digital resilience best practices with the UKCIS Executive Board, other UKCIS working groups, the wider stakeholder community, as well as the public.

The group is co-chaired by Vicki Shotbolt and Dr Richard Graham.

Group members are drawn from a select cross-section of expert organisations with a commitment to digital resilience and the overall aims of UKCIS. Membership is voluntary and invite-only.

DRWG published the Digital Resilience Framework and is responsible for the development and maintenance of this site.

What are the other UKCIS working groups?

Education

The UK Council for Internet Safety (UKCIS) Education Working Group (EWG) brings together organisations working on online safety in education with leading roles in policy, standards, training or provision of resources. The group aims to enable improvements in the provision of online safety education and the safeguarding of children and young people in education settings across the UK. Key products of the Education Working Group include the Education for a Connected World framework, Sexting in Schools and Colleges guidance, and ‘Online safety in schools and colleges: Questions from the Governing Board’.

Early Warning

The Early Warning Working Group will be a standing group, and will look to keep the UKCIS Executive Board up to date with the issues and trends in relation to online risk and harm that are emerging and have been identified by the helplines, hotlines and reporting centres in the UK.

Evidence

The UKCIS Evidence Group provides UKCIS with a timely, critical and rigorous account of relevant research in the online harms area. It includes representatives from academia, government, NGOs and industry, and meets regularly in order to identify, evaluate and commission new research relevant to child and adult internet safety, wellbeing and harm.
